Red and White Porridge
Red and White Porridge, Symbol of New Human Presence in the Family. - When I took a morning walk to the traditional market of Tempel in Sleman Yogyakarta Indonesia, I saw 2 women who were busy selling Red Porridge and White Porridge. I am reminded that this red and white porridge is a ritual offering to welcome the birth of a baby in a Javanese family. - Red Porridge (the color is brownish, because it is made using brown sugar) and White Porridge (in the form of rice cooked with coconut milk, pandanus leaves and salt to become porridge) this means as a symbol of hope. - In Javanese culture, red and white porridge is a ritual offering made when a new baby is born. This red and white color is not meaningless. Red represents the egg cell and white symbolizes sperm. Therefore the presentation of red and white porridge together in one bowl. That is, it symbolizes the egg cell and the sperm meets then gives birth to a new human.
